How to become a top medium writer?
Less than 10% of active medium writers earn over $100 per month. Tips to help you break through and become a top writer and earner.
Medium is now considered one of the most popular blogging sites. Medium is a platform specifically designed for writers and readers. The platform is also very great for portfolio building. With the number of medium writers on the rise, this article will discuss useful tips that can enable writers to break through and become top writers and earners.
We will define a top writer as a writer that earns $100 or more per month from the medium partner program. Data from the Medium Writers monthly newsletters show that less than 10% of active writers earn $100 or more per month (see Table below).
The figure below shows a plot of the percentage of writers who earned $100 or more for the past 11 month, the most recent being the month of June.
From the table above, the current moving average of writers who earned $100 or more is 7.4%. However, we see from the plot above that the percentage has reduced greatly to slightly above 5% for the past 3 months. This could partly be due to the fact that the number of active writers is on the rise, hence while more writers are earning money, they are not breaking through the $100 or more limit to be considered top writers.
In the next section, we will discuss some tips that can enable a writer to break through and become a top writer and earner.
II. Tips to enable you become a top writer and earner
(a) Write prolifically. As you write prolifically, your articles will gain popularity over time, and this will translate into more views, reads, fans, and earnings.
(b) Adopt a writing style that is unique to you. For example, I always structure my articles using the same format: Introduction, Body Sections, and Conclusion. Also, I try to create my own featured image that is unique to me. See for example the following articles:
(c) Write high quality curated articles. It’s good to write prolifically, but you want to make sure you are not prioritizing quantity over quality. For more tips on writing curated articles, please see the following article: What Curators Look for in a Story.
(d) Choose a good featured image for your article. A captivating featured image will enhance the quality of your article and will increase the likelihood that your article will be viewed and read. When choosing a featured image, make sure you don’t violate any copyright rules. One way to avoid violating copyright rules would be to use images from unsplash or you can create your own images. For more guidance, see the following: Choose the Right Featured Image For Your Data Science Articles.
(e) Focus on one area. It’s good to focus your energy on one area instead of writing about several different topics. I focus my articles on data science education and data science as a profession.
(f) Be patient, success takes time. It takes time to build a reputation as a good writer. In my case, the first 12 months of writing were very tough, but I never gave up. I kept writing and writing and writing. I have seen my earnings rise from under $2/month to $900 per month. In the past 3 months, my average earning is $600/month.
(g) Keep the length of your articles to about 4 to 6 minutes read. Most readers will not have a lot of time to spend reading your articles, so it’s good to write short and concise articles.
(h) Embed some code and equations if possible. If you are writing a quantitative article such as an article in data science, the quality of your article could be improved if you embed some equations and code into your article. See the following examples:

(i) You can submit your article to a publication. For example I submit my data science articles to medium publications that are focused on data science. The 2 top data science publications are Towards Data Science and Towards AI. Publishing in a medium publication will help your articles to receive more publicity and traffic.
